Q & A with Michael

A chimney inspection and repair professional standing next to a branded vehicle in front of a house garage. The man is wearing a uniform shirt with the name 'Michael' and company logo, smartwatch, and a baseball cap with a chimney logo.

Why did you get into this business originally?

My dad is the reason why I got into this. He was one of those guys that could fix anything. He was a really talented guy. And I like the idea of fixing something. There's something noble about fixing something... like repairing a car or a chimney. You bring it back to life. You take something that was old and deteriorated and you make it viable and usable again. I think there's something noble about that. I think the fact that it's honest work, that's important to me.

Did you learn from him?

Yeah. I learned everything I know about fixing a house from him. He was one of those guys that could fix anything. He could fix a car, a house, electrical, and plumbing...That's valuable. But the most valuable thing my dad taught me was work ethic and working hard. I don't know anybody that worked harder than him. We had to pull him off the ladder when he was eighty, crazy!

What was your career path that lead you to specialize in Chimney repair work?

I started my career as a foreman for a general contractor who built and remodeled homes—that contractor happened to be my father. When I came to Los Angeles, I became a home inspector, ultimately focusing on chimneys. Like I said, I have always loved taking something old and giving it new life, whether it be cars, motorcycles, houses, or chimneys. Chimneys are unique because they create a calm environment for friends and family. There is something unique about listening to music or reading a book to a soothing fire. Chimneys are special.

You’ve got a steady stream of clients, and they’re all leaving glowing five-star reviews on Yelp. What do you think it is about your service that has them praising you?

I go on about 18 inspections a week. If you do the math, that’s approximately 930 appointments a year. I do the job right and I think people trust me because I am fair with my pricing. I don’t price gouge. If I go to an appointment and there are no actual repairs needed, I tell my client that.

The reviews makes me feel like I'm doing a good job. And then other potential clients actually read them. They are really hard to get because people don’t have time to spare. But they do it for me, and they are very personal about it. A lot of them say he is very honest. Honest is a big is a running team through it because you know, a lot of people had a bad experience with the previous company…And then I come in.

My first interaction with Chimney Checkup was with George. My impression based on his professionalism was that he was the owner. He instantly made me feel good about my choice of making an appointment to have my chimney cleaned.
